Service Objects' DOTS FastTax is a hosted, programmable XML Web Service that allows you to lookup up-to-date sales and use tax rate information for every U.S. and Canada tax jurisdiction. DOTS FastTax allows you to integrate sales and use tax rate information lookup into your applications, business processes, and Web sites. DOTS FastTax enables a simple, quick and accurate way to calculate sales tax and use tax, completely on the web for only pennies per transaction.

If an item is subject to sales tax in the state to which the order is shipped, tax is generally calculated on the total selling price of each individual item. However, some states do not change sales tax for Freight (Shipping) and Handling (Labor). Every rate within our service also has flags for which services are exempt. These elements are available and must be parsed individually. When you buy goods while in (for example) Idaho, the retailer should charge Idaho sales tax. When you buy goods over the Internet while Idaho, by telephone, or from a mail-order catalog, the retailer will not charge sales tax if he is not also an Idaho retailer. However, in this case, you owe use tax.

'Service' generally refers to professional service such as accounting, legal, or professional services. 'Labor' generally refers to manual labor such as home repairs. 'Freight' generally refers to shipping charges separately stated on an invoice. If freight is combined with tangible personal property charges on an invoice, these exempt rules may not apply. Your specific delivery method, product or service may receive different tax treatment in a state. If in doubt, contact the state in question or your tax professional.
