In a recent blog, we discussed one of the hottest issues in this year’s retail season: WISMO, short for “Where IS My Order.” In this blog, we’d like to take a deeper dive into the consequences of WISMO, and how it isn’t too late to prevent it before this holiday shopping season.
WISMO by the numbers
First of all, this year – fueled by both growing trends in online ecommerce, and a global pandemic that has led many of us to shop from our keyboards – promises to be the busiest holiday season ever for deliveries. According to figures from Deloitte, 2020 holiday ecommerce is slated to grow by an enormous 35% this year, to a new record of nearly US $200 billion, and numerous sources note that shopping for the holidays is taking place earlier than ever this year.
And of course, deliveries continue to boom regardless of the season. While it is still too early to estimate 2020 package volume, it will certainly exceed PwC’s 2018 pre-pandemic estimate of 16 billion packages worldwide, with USPS, UPS and FedEx alone currently delivering a combined volume of 60 million packages per day. More importantly, over 11% of these shipments were damaged or mis-delivered.
This leads us to the economic and brand consequences of WISMO. According to the delivery experience management firm Convey, 44.3% of shoppers feel brands are not creating successful delivery experiences, and 83.5% are unlikely to shop with a brand again after even ONE poor delivery experience. Moreover, a near-total 98.5% of shoppers view shipping as having an impact on brand loyalty. Conversely, having accurate and reliable deliveries can form an important part of your overall service reputation and build market share.
When it comes to WISMO, both your shipping and customer service contact information is important – the former for ensuring accurate deliveries, and the latter for your ability to get in touch with customers and provide delivery visibility. Add in the urgency of accurate deliveries in the midst of a global pandemic, and this is one of the most critical times for your business to ensure that all of your contact information is accurate, reliable and up-to-date.
